News: Meet Huw Owen, Classic Car Enthusiast & Production Manager at NERAK UK

How did you come to be part of the team? NERAK used to supply parts for my previous business and I had to come to the Brecon site regularly. I liked the variety of trades and customer projects. I thought it was great that you could be working in manufacture one day and the next you could be working on site with customers anywhere in the UK. I started to drop hints that I’d like to be part of the team. Luckily they welcomed me on board and I haven’t looked back since.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work? I’m quite a simple guy. I like to get out on the hills with my two jack russells Jinxy and Pringles. We’re so lucky where we live, the scenery is outstanding. I’ve recently taken up off-roading with my V8 land rover discovery, it’s really refreshing to get out on a weekend and explore in the truck with the kids and dogs in the back.

I also like a few cheeky beers with the lads and watching the rugby but as I have a baby daughter who is 10 weeks old and a 10 year old son, those things are becoming more of a distant memory!

What are the most important things in your life? Aside from my kids it would be Jinxy and Pringles who do get treated like royalty. I value them so much, they helped me through some very tough times. We’ve also got other pets in the household; a cat that the dogs don’t get on with, 20 tropical fish and 2 terrapins. All in all they keep me pretty busy.

How do you feel about your career with NERAK so far? I enjoy coming to work. I’m very career orientated. When I joined I could see the potential stepping stones ahead of me and the business has backed me all the way. I’m not degree trained but I’ve had some fantastic opportunities here which have allowed me to push my career forward.

What’s on your bucket list? I’ve got an old classic Mercedes 280 sport which I bought to take to the Nürburgring in Germany. That’s top of my list at the moment but in the future I’d love to travel and explore South America and Brazil.

What does NERAK mean to you? For me personally NERAK represents opportunity. We’re tucked away in the Brecon Beacons supplying some of the biggest global corporations in the world. The projects we get involved with are right at the business end of fast evolving technology in our sector and they’re spread across a really diverse range of industries. We are seeing how automation and robotics are influencing our customers first hand, it’s really exciting.

So my job is not just a job, it’s my passion to drive forward. I don’t just come to work, I come here because I enjoy the challenges driven from the high standards we set ourselves as a team and of course, the fast pace of production that doesn’t stop for anyone.
