We believe Supporting Apprenticeships is the right thing to do. It is morally and ethically correct as it plays a vital part in shaping the future of NERAK. The opportunity for younger people to have the freedom to grow and develop with the full support of those around them can set them up for life.
Anyone who has been fortunate to have a brilliant mentor during their career can appreciate the difference someone investing their time, knowledge and guidance can make.
We recognise that this could be the only time in a young apprentice’s life that they can really take the time to focus fully on developing both their skill set and also as people. It’s crucial we set them up with a strong footing for their careers.
We currently have three very talented apprentices. Oliver Davies and Lewis Jones who study Mechanical Engineering and Jemma Morris who is doing a Business Administration Apprenticeship.
The development of apprenticeships has been a necessity for us. We recognised several years ago that we needed to have this in our long-term plans and we intend to enrol many more as the business grows. We are based in a beautiful part of Wales and we want to support our local community and the engineering industry as a whole with this investment.
Within our management team, there are people who were apprentices themselves. They are very proud of this and have seen the value of the scheme first hand, “it’s a very powerful thing, it comes full circle and you want others to benefit in the same way you did.”
Oliver Davies was our first apprentice. When we employ people we want to see someone who has the NERAK values which Ollie did.
He was conscientious, bright and enthusiastic but didn’t have the necessary skills we needed right away however we knew he was capable of them. Recently he passed his exams at distinction level and we are really proud of him.
Our apprentices are employed by us at the same time as attending college. Depending on which year they are in, time spent at NERAK can vary from being either full time at college with holiday periods being spent with us or being nearly full time with us and one day a week in college.
We pay our apprentices well above the standard rate because we want them to feel valued, they are also eligible for our profit share scheme from the offset.
A huge amount of time, effort and money go into this. We make sure they are not given menial jobs like is sometimes the way in other companies. Their tasks are always focused on building their skillset.
We set them up with mentors from the offset and the expectations of them are high. They are put with the most skilled people so that they can learn at the highest levels. They are given regular reviews and we go to their colleges to meet their tutors to discuss progress.
We believe you have to put everything in, recognise that your own efficiencies will reduce during this time but the long-term gain is huge for all parties.
Our intention is to employ all our apprentices in their fully-fledged roles at the end of the apprenticeship period.
We see the completion of the apprenticeship as the cement in the footings of their future. They will continue to be given every opportunity to build on their learnings and evolve with the business. The sky is the limit in our eyes.
We can’t express enough how much we enjoy and recommend businesses doing this. It is so rewarding to see people build their skills and their confidence in equal measures, it has exceeded all our expectations.
